based in the beautiful country of belize, home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, #plasticfreereefs was born out of a dream to help keep the oceans free of plastic.

Over eight million tons of plastic flows into our oceans every single year, and a recent study predicted that by 2050, the amount of plastic in our oceans will outweigh the number of fish. Caribbean countries depend more on coastal and marine environments than any other region on earth and in Belize, we know first-hand the realities of plastic in the ocean. It’s why, in 2019, we were the first Caribbean country to start implementing a nationwide ban on single-use plastics.

Over 500 million straws are used per day in the US alone, and although straws amount to a small fraction of ocean plastic, they are one of the most dangerous polluters. Their small size means they entangle marine animals, and are easily consumed by fish. This is why Plastic Free Reefs, supported by some incredible partners, is beginning its campaign journey dedicated to removing them from being a part of the problem. Learn about our products and read why they make the difference.

We aim to educate people on the importance of ocean conservation while creating accessibility to naturally marine-degradable products in Belize and the Caribbean.
